We got engaged during the pandemic! Our Proposal Story
If you’ve been following me for some time, you know I’ve talked a lot about singleness and have also shared how I spent all my high school and college years single.
Well, a couple of weeks after I graduated college, I had another encounter with FJ, and little did I know, less than two and a half years later he would ask me to marry him.
I look back to our love story and I can’t help but see how God was leading us to each other for years and I…well, I tried to ignore it but God’s timing is perfect.
Our Proposal Story
Let me just begin by saying even a couple of months after the proposal, I had to pinch myself as a reminder that he indeed asked me to be his wife. Yes, we were dating with the intention of marriage but I was very much surprised at the timing of the proposal.
On a beautiful summer Sunday, I got ready for what I thought was my scheduled photoshoot. My sister from DRose Photos was aware of the release of my book Singleness Done Right and wanted to bless me with the shoot. Although we had to reschedule it once due to the weather, we finally agreed to a date. It eventually drizzled a bit on the day of the photoshoot but my photographer convinced me that rain or shine, we were having this shoot.
My photographer suggested a picnic-style shoot instead of my original plan.
Considering it was the summer, I did not think that idea was strange at all. So I went and shopped for a picnic-like dress. I got a basket for my book (as well as the companion journal), and some flowers so the shoot could be complete.
My best friend from college flew from Washington D.C and a couple of hours before the shoot, we went out to spend time together (I forgave her for telling me she was in town for something else lol). Since my friend’s flight wasn’t leaving anytime soon, she asked to come along with me to the shoot.
Here’s another part that I loved about this whole plan:
A couple of weeks preceding the proposal, my photographer brought along a friend with her as an assistant. I usually watch Drose Photo’s Instagram stories so I saw the whole assistant scheme and thought it was completely normal when she showed up at my shoot (lol).
Nope, sis does not have an assistant! (At least not yet, but in Jesus name, may she have one soon). They planned this out because they needed extra people to distract me in order for the idea to work well!
I later found out that my husband to be, FJ, had a whole team helping him plan the proposal during my shoot. My photographer and two other friends were part of the team that made the proposal exceptional.
Fast forward to the shoot
The photoshoot was held at a gazebo in a nearby town. I’m so excited to share the photos with you all on my IG page here. If you’ve been following along, you know that so far it’s my photographer and two of my friends there. I have some pretty supportive friends so believe it or not, it was not strange. One would hold the basket and book while the other would suggest ideas.
The shoot started on the other side of the gazebo. It made sense because I would later learn the proposal was to take place past the bridge, in the gazebo. After posing and having a good time with my friends, it was eventually time to head toward the designated location.
I was shocked, to say the least. As we walked together, I looked further ahead and saw a group of people. My soon to be husband was standing in the middle wearing a white shirt and holding some flowers.
‘Wait, am I seeing this right’? Tears welled up in my eyes because I couldn’t help but think about the many times we’ve discussed our future. Now he was ready to take this big step towards it. He was ready to ask me to be his forever partner.
What else was going on in my mind while looking at him standing there?

Maybe next year- God willing he said! Lol. Let’s go back to it.
The closer I reached, the more I cried uncontrollably. I tried to contain myself… But honestly, I was overly excited that I would get to experience spending life with the one I love. It didn’t even matter that our friends and family would get to see my ugly cry.
As I walk up to him, I was not nervous but I could tell that he was. FJ prefers to not be the center of attention but in the past, he has asked me how would I like to be proposed to. The fact that he had our friends and family there showed me he was taking notes.
Although it would have been easier for him to propose with only the two of us as a witness, I was thankful for his sacrifice to do what he knew would please me.
He shared a few words with me then popped the question. “We are truly engaged!!”, that’s all I thought about as our friends and family came over to congratulate us and take a few pictures.
So much has happened in 2020 and this was one of them. I’m so looking forward to sharing more on the engagement process (and in the future- marriage).
