The focus for this month has been all about L O V E. My church group is even watching a whole series called Relationship Goals. I highly recommend you check it out if you haven’t.
Given the occasion, I figured I’d make a post about my favorite Scriptures on love. Keep in mind that there are different kinds of love. While the Bible touches on each type, we normally concentrate on the love the Father has for us (agape). I will go over three form type of love: Philos, Eros, and Agape.
Philos
This type of love is the one that we ought to have toward friends, family and pretty much toward everyone else. It’s the feeling of affection and friendship we have for others.
It’s the love that Jonathan has for David. If you’re not familiar with the story, take some time to check it out.
And Jonathan and David made a covenant together because Jonathan loved David as much as himself. -1 Samuel 18:3
It’s the love that Jesus calls us to have toward those in our midst.
Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. -Romans 12:10
Eros
This type of love is more of a physical form of love. God created us with the desire for sexual intimacy which is meant to take place between a husband and a wife. While eros is important in a marriage, it is not enough. Philos must also be developed.

The husband should fulfill his wife’s sexual needs, and the wife should fulfill her husband’s needs.– 1 Corinthians 7:3
Kiss me and kiss me again, for your love is sweeter than wine.– Song of Solomon 1:1
Agape
We’re all very familiar with this type of love: it is the unconditional love that The Father (God) has for us. There is nothing we can do to change how The Father feels about us. It is also the type of love that takes place between God and His Son Jesus.
But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, 5 that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!).- Ephesians 2:4-5
In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us. -1 John 4:9-10
