Humility: What I've learned about it this year

I didn’t come up with a Word of the Year for myself in the beginning of last year but looking back now, that word would be have been humility.

I thought I knew what humility was all about until I found myself in an ongoing challenge this past year.

Throughout it all, I kept asking God questions like, why am I going through this; what am I suppose to learn from this situation.

It was one of those situations where there was just no way out.

Even though I wasn’t completely alone in facing the situation, I felt almost as though I was because everyone else in my surrounding was reacting to it in a manner that didn’t sit right with me. My flesh wanted to scream and shout, retaliate and so much more. But instead, through the help of the Holy Spirit, I found myself keeping my mouth shut and talking to God about it.

While I felt like I was being attacked, I eventually learned that I was looking at it all the wrong way. It wasn’t about me being attacked- that was only a part of it. Initially, my mindset was to simply defend myself and get my way. But that’s not what happened…

I came to the realization that it was a test of my character.

Yep. God does that sometimes. He takes you through different tests to help you grow. The tests won’t be easy but you’ll be glad you went through them afterward.

Through this past test, I learned that part of humility is:

1. Praying for those who persecute you

This is a tough one. Praying for those who hate you is not easy but it is part of being Christ-like. It shows Jesus that you’re striving to be like Him.

2. Being quiet and patient when attacked

Initially, I thought I was being weak by not saying anything but our Savior did the same when He was being accused. He wasn’t trying to defend himself. He knew His Heavenly Father was taking care of business.

And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did not answer.- Matthew 27:12

3. Being intentional about speaking well of others instead of putting them down

Sometimes we use our words to hurt those who’ve hurt us. As the saying goes, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Putting others down naturally make us feel good. But by us choosing to do otherwise, we are resisting the negative desires in us and humbling ourselves before God.

4. Confessing your sins to God and others

Truth be told, when we fall short and acknowledge that we’ve fallen, God gives us more grace.

God opposes the proud
but gives grace to the humble.– 1 Peter 5:5

Humility isn’t about thinking less of ourselves.

It’s about choosing to not magnify ourselves but instead glorifying God in each situation we’re faced with.
