Finding Rest in God During Finals Week

Finding Rest in God during Finals

Finding Rest in God during Finals

If you’re in college, you know how it gets during finals week. For many of us, finals week means running on caffeine with 4 hours of sleep or less. Some of us spend tons of hours at the library studying and writing papers while eating so much less healthy than usual.

Let’s just say it involves dealing with extremely high levels of stress, which for the most part derives from the pressure of having to finish the semester strong.

At the end of each semester, we feel as though it is our last chance to do everything right or else we fail.

As believers, we are commanded to find rest in Christ. Somehow during finals week, we forget about the peace which God freely gives. Instead, we choose to carry all the stress and anxiety on our own.

So how do we find rest in God during such stressful time? This verse in Isaiah pretty much sums it up:

You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You (Isaiah 26:3).

I recall during finals week of my first few semesters of college, I would spend my days solely focusing on studying and completing projects that I would push away everything else.  Sadly, that sometimes included skipping spending time with God.

It’s as though I was forgetting that I am in college to glorify Him with my future career. When things got rough, instead of keeping my mind fixed on Him, my thoughts were filled up with worries about whether or not I will do well on exams.

I came to the realization that before anything, I needed to trust in the Lord. Because If I don’t trust Him, I’ll continue to worry and that will keep my focus away from Him.

I want to share some practical ways you can keep your mind stayed on the Lord during such chaotic time.

Begin each morning by reading the Word.

It doesn’t have to be a full hour or even 30 minutes. Just wake up and start reading the Word before stepping out into your hurried day.

Practice praying throughout the day.

Yes, I know, I know. You will be occupied with your studies and etc but you can talk to God even then. During your study breaks, you can say a prayer of thanksgiving. When walking to class, you can talk to Him. When driving or taking the bus, you can say a quick prayer for others. You get the point. You can pray anywhere and anytime.

Spend an hour or two during the week with other believers (instead of Netflix).

This one is a bit new to me but it is so refreshing fellowshipping and hearing about the goodness of the Lord.

College to most can be extremely overwhelming but during finals week, the intensity increases. I hope this post can help you find rest in God during such time.

What are other ways you keep your mind fixed on the Lord during finals week?

Another way to keep your focus on God is to ask Him to help you study. I’ve experienced this it’s amazing what they Lord will get into when we invite Him.

Absolutely! He’s always waiting to hear from us. Sometimes all we need to do is ask and He’ll answer. I’ve experienced that many times lol.

As a college student, when finding it difficult to set aside time for the Lord, I recommend that the use of a daily journal. You can use this journal to take note of certain passages from the Bible that you may be reading up on or you can also use it to jot down some prayers. This helps you develop a healthy habit of setting aside time for the Lord.

Also, try not to let the stress of exams consume you. It is important to take a breather every once in a while. Taking a break and listening to your favorite gospel songs can be very refreshing!

Thank you for the good read, love!
