A Prayer to Pray For All Believers Including Yourself

Do you ever feel like you’re praying the same prayers over and over again? Ever feel like you want to switch it up but have no clue what to say?

I have found that the Bible can be of great help in situations like that.

I have been reading this book for a couple weeks and thought this prayer would be helpful for anyone wanting to pray a new prayer for their family, friends and those in their community.

You can actually even pray this over yourself. It is so good!

Paul wrote this prayer because there were some doctrinal issues circulating in the church of Colosse. I love that even though he did not plant the church, he cares so deeply for them and prayed for them that the Lord may give them wisdom.

The prayer from Colossians 1:9-11 can be broken down into two sections.

In verse 9, Paul is interceding on behalf of the church asking God for spiritual wisdom. The second half of the prayer is a result of spiritual wisdom (obedience)- hence the word “then” at the beginning of verse 10.

The Prayer

So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding

The very first thing Paul ask here is that God may help them to know the will of God. And that spiritually, they may be wise and understanding.

Colossians 1:10

Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.

Next, Paul goes from knowledge to actions. He prays that they will not only be spiritually wise but that they may live a life that shows that they are wise.

That their lives may honor and please God.

That every good fruit may be shown from their life.

That as they learn more and more about God, they may grow.

The Message version reads, ” As you learn more and more how God works, you will learn how to do your work”. That is just so good and so true. The more we understand who God is and why He created us, we begin to live more boldly for Him. So, pray that over whoever you’re praying for.

Colossians 1:11

We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy,

Last, we can do nothing apart from the Holy Spirit living in us. Paul is praying that the Holy Spirit may strengthen the church when things at all times.

How can you pray this prayer?

Be specific in praying this prayer. When praying for spiritual wisdom, for instance, you can:

Pray that the person you’re praying for desires spiritual wisdom.
Pray that they have a desire to read and meditate on the Word of God
In relation to spiritual wisdom, as you pray, pray that the person you’re praying for may have an encounter with Jesus where they get to talk and be good friends.
