The heart is unmistakably very important to God because in 1 Samuel 16:7b, God says to Samuel:

“The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

And in the Beatitudes from Matthew 5:8, Jesus shared with His disciples:

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God”.

The heart reveals who we truly are. The Lord chooses to look at the heart because everything we do initiates from the heart.

It is so easy for us to be led astray if we choose to not guard our heart. From our heart, we start thinking about evil things. From there, we start being jealous of others or being envious of others and more.

We can see why King Solomon says “Above all else…”. He is suggesting that we must make guarding our heart a priority.

Guarding our heart should not only be important when it comes to our relationships but it should also be a must if we want to live a set-apart life for Christ.
